Clean from Blocks
Overview
Clean from Blocks is an exercise that provides an opportunity to focus on body positions and movement characteristics in the middle and end stages of the pull, and to work on fast movement under the bar.
Key Coaching Points
- In the start position for the Clean from Blocks, the shins should be close to vertical, and the shoulders should be slightly forward of the bar.
- Start the pull with a smooth and unhurried action. Avoid trying to start the pull with a jolt.
- Keep the shoulders in front of the bar for as long as possible. This will ensure shoulders rise vertically and avoid the common error of excessive body rotation.
- Accelerate upward body movement sharply as the bar reaches mid-thigh.
- Make every effort to drop under the bar with speed. Developing speed under the bar takes much time and practise.
- Foot movement must be fast and feet must land flat. This is a major coaching cue.
- Ensure elbows are rotated fast and high to avoid contact with the knees.
- Stop briefly in the receiving position and practise excellence of body posture with elbows held high.
