Snatch with No Pull

Primary Objective

The Snatch with No Pull skill drill helps the athlete learn to move rapidly under the bar into a deep receiving position.

Key Coaching Points

Beginners will find this skill drill extremely challenging to learn in the first instance, and will need encouragement that it is possible to perform a Snatch from the hips without upward movement of the body.

  • The bar weight should be as light as possible during the initial learning period. 8-10kg bars are suitable for adults, whereas young teens or children should use 5kg bars or less.
  • Stand with the bar at the hip and be stationary before attempting the downward drop.
  • No pull of any amount is allowed before starting the descent.
  • The first action is to drop downwards fast, using your arms only to create upward force on the bar.
  • Do not poke your head forward as you drop under the bar.
The Snatch with No Pull is an excellent skill drill for all athletes learning fast movement under the bar into a deep Snatch receiving position.

In this skill drill, athletes should avoid any tendency to perform a slight pull before descending under the bar. The action involves a simultaneous upward force with the arms and a rapid downward movement.
